Installation of an X band radar and other devices from the EPFL research group around Alexis Berne

All in all, it's not just another radar on the hill. Both radar and cameras further extend the range of our observations.

by Robert Spirig

Just yesterday we could welcome our colleagues from the EPFL, namely the external pageresearch group around Alexis Berne, when they brought yet another radar - this time an X band - to complement our already extensive measurement array. This puts the total number of radars that we operate within the CLOUDLAB framework to six: The new X band (12 GHz), one K band (24 GHz) two Ka bands (35 GHz), two W bands (94 GHz). Most are located at our main site Rapier Platz except for one W band, located at a site usually downwind during Bise (North-Easterly winds) to further extend our sampling of ice crystals to longer time frames. The combination of different frequencies respectively wavelengths will also be uniquely well suited to compare radar performance itself.

Additionally, the multi-angle snowflake camera (MASC) supplements the installed other precipitaiton samplers (2DVD from TROPOS and VISSS from LIM).

Looking forward to some great measurements!
